ʻŌpua Typeface Collection exhibition at Kaiao Space

by CJ Dunn, Marika Higgins

ʻŌpua is a collection of typefaces from CJ Type developed around the concept of Hawaiʻi futurism. The collection contains three sub-families connected to Hawaiʻi, specifically ʻŌpua Mauka (the mountain side) ʻŌpua Makai (the ocean side) and ʻŌpua Ko'olau (the windward side). The typefaces were first used on an aloha shirt released with Sig on Smith, with an accompanying exhibition at Kaiao Space to tell the story of the typeface development and show examples of it used for posters, apparel, signage, and a video installation.

*Most of the exhibition photos are by Michelle Mishina with exhibition materials designed CJ Dunn and Marika Higgins along with a few snapshots. Aloha shirt model photography by Mark Kushimi, modeling by Brennan. Thanks to Kūhaʻo Zane, Zen Yoshifuku, Aja Toscano, and the entire Sig Zane Designs/Sig On Smith/Kaiao Space team. And thank you to everyone who purchased font license for the ʻŌpua Typeface Collection and who came to visit the exhibition in person. If I’m missing any other credits please let me know!
